Gutters are a crucial component of a building’s roofing system, designed to collect and channel rainwater away from the foundation. They play a vital role in preventing water damage to the foundation, walls, and landscaping by directing rainwater to designated drainage areas. Gutters are typically installed along the edges of the roof, and they work to ensure effective rainwater management.

Gutters can be made from a wide variety of different materials, including aluminum, vinyl, copper, steel, and galvanized iron. Each material has its own set of advantages and disadvantages. We install aluminum gutters in most scenarios as they are lightweight, cost-effective, and have a wide assortment of different colors. Modern gutters are shaped like a K from the side and are called K-style, or ogee. Older homes may still have the half-circle, rounded gutter style that was popular a few decades ago. We install only the K-sytle gutters, but we can perform maintenance on the older style if your home still has them.

When we talk about gutters, we’re talking about an entire system that is made up of gutters, downspouts, and extensions. The gutters and selves are attached to the eaves underneath the roofing shingles, and the downspouts are the vertical sections usually located in the corners or ends of the gutter. They carry water down from the gutter to the ground. You’ll often find extensions on the end of the downspouts, which direct water out into the yard and away from the foundation. We also offer gutter guard installation services. Gutter guards are covers that prevent the gutter system from clogging due to leaves, twigs, and other debris.

Your home’s foundation is a critical component that bears the weight of the entire structure. To safeguard it from potential damage and ensure its longevity, proper rainwater management is extremely important. This is where gutters step in as unsung heroes, playing a crucial role in preventing foundation issues and the need for costly repairs.

Gutters help protect a home’s foundation by:

  • Diverting rainwater away from the foundation of the home and into the yard. If your home does not have gutters installed, rainwater can cascade down the side of your home, which will saturate the soil around the foundation and cause soil expansion and contraction
  • Preventing soil erosion by controlling and containing runoff water. If runoff water is allowed to pool at the base of the foundation, it can create a void next to or under slabs or piers. These voids compromise the stability of the foundation.
  • Reducing hydrostatic pressure on slab foundations. If water pools around the base of the foundation, hydrostatic pressure builds and can weaken the foundation through stress.
  • Reducing moisture around the foundation is a key component of foundation maintenance and can reduce mold and mildew growth in pier and beam systems.
